About Explore Media
Explore Media is a community media initiative coordinated by the City of York Council involving volunteers, community groups and organisations which aims to promote access and opportunities to community media for people and communities.
We aim to enable people to establish and develop community based communications for empowerment, cultural expression, local democracy, social inclusion, community cohesion, information and entertainment.
Explore Media has enabled us to buy state of the art media equipment for a flexible community media centre in the new Explore York Central Library.
The new facilities will enable community groups and residents to create their own podcasts, short films, radio broadcasts and social networking sites; and some of the portable equipment will be available for loan by community groups.
We hope to have equipment available for hire for community groups aswell as running open workshops and taster sessions at York Explore by September 2010.

Three roadshows provided an introduction to the project and the facilities on offer, followed up by a series of workshops in February and March, enabling people to get practical hands-on introductions to using media technologies. Additional special projects gave international students in York the opportunity to record their digital stories, work with staff from Future Prospects, and enabled a group from Accessible Arts and Media to create their own films.
The Explore Media project is funded by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills as part of the Learning Revolution, and is delivered by CYC in partnership with Khaoz Media, York CVS, Future Prospects and Accessible Arts & Media.
